Doesn't the name just sound inviting? I mean, when you hear the words Spa Quilt, surely you must think of relaxing, tinkling music, heat, mist, sun, surf, beach balls bouncing off your head, kids crying, sand in your food, eyes, orifices...whaaaaa? Sorry, I digress...I was doing so well there with the music and mist part but got a bit carried away with the sun and surf! I've had a hard time lately keeping with one train of thought...still riding the Pain Train with my arm...but stick with me, I do have a point, oh no sorry, no point, but I do have a picture...
My newly finished Spa Quilt. It IS relaxing. And I swear I can hear tinkling music when I wrap it around me...no heat or mist or sun or surf and thankfully none of the other stuff, just pure SOFT, soft fabrics that have been washed and dried and now feel like buttah!
Yes, I know, you're thinking, What's the big deal? It's just another circle quilt! But you're wrong, Grasshopper...because this circle quilt is different from all the others, it is backed with an old Chenille Bedspread!!!
It's nubbiness is what makes this so fun - and did I mention soft? The Chenille makes this lounge-worthy. Even Nap-worthy. Oh for Heaven's sake, let me spell it out for you...wrap-up-in-the-afternoon-on-a-weekday-watching-back-to-back-episodes-of-Botched-Worthy! Need I say more?
And the binding...well, I broke the rules once again and used silk. It's smooth and soft and it just fits with the whole Spa-kum-bah-yah thing I was going for, no?
I've probably made over a dozen circle quilts - but none that have been backed with Chenille...so this is my new favorite circle quilt! I made it for me to use while I was sitting at home with my arm in a sling...you know, to catch the chips and cookie crumbs while I was pity-partying-away on the sofa...but I didn't get it finished until just a few days ago so it missed all the crumb action! My arm is still in a sling (hate that thing) but at least now I'm not on heavy drugs so I can function somewhat. I was going to quilt this one myself but it just didn't happen. I gave it to Vicki Stratton to quilt for me and she did a great job! (If any local's want Vicki's info, shoot me an email.)
(About quilting this...I did try but the nubbiness of the backing kept getting caught in the feed dogs. I purchased some sewing tape, think painters tape but in pink, and covered the feed dogs and other holes in the sewing plate with the tape but I still had trouble. That's when I gave up and called Vicki. I'm not sure why I couldn't get it to work - I can sew a straight stitch on the Chenille without problems but machine quilting just wouldn't work...anyone have any thoughts?)
Sweet Rosie loves this quilt as much as me!!! Every chance she gets she curls up in it with her favorite toys...her pink squeaker and her soap dish! Poor little Scragglemuffin...she needs a hair appointment! I'm quite happy to share this quilt with Rosie...she's only 7 lbs. of fluff so she doesn't require much space!
