For the first time in many months, all but one of us made it to our monthly meeting and it was SO great to see everyone - we had to do some serious catching up! We managed to see a few quilts in between all the chatter and the laughs...
The monthly color for blocks was gray...as you can see, one of us is not very good at following the rules! I didn't think I would love a mostly gray quilt - but after seeing these blocks I know I would!
These are some of the American Hero blocks that were turned in - we are still collecting them and have been since February - I'm sure we have well over 100 by now. In the new year we'll have a sew day or two to get them all pieced together, hopefully into many quilt tops.
Isn't this wonderful?!? Our former member, Dawn, made this quilt and donated it to Play for Pink (a golf fund-raiser for breast cancer). Janet saw it and was able to outbid everyone else to win this quilt! Look at all those curves!!! Way to go Dawn - miss you!
Ardith brought in her Halloween quilt she is making for her grandkids - the top is now finished and ready to be quilted. This was made with the help of a panel - what I would have called a cheater quilt in the stupidity of my quilting youth...but now, with wiser eyes and less time, I'm all for cheater quilts!
This is a quilt Jenny has been working on. I was out of the room for some of the discussion about it so I'm not sure if Jen made it start to finish or if she put it together or repaired it or what - but it's a beaut! Here's a close up of the redwork...
Teapots and cups - and the handwork is really nice! Jenny is going to add a border to the quilt so it will be a bit larger when finished. Jenny told us she had a show and a tell...this quilt was her show and her tell was so exciting! Of course, we all guessed that she was pregnant (because she is the only one of us who is young enough to actually get pregnant!) ...and that wasn't it. Nope, Jenny and her family are going on a walk-about! They will be gone for a year, living all over the country! What a fun thing to do! We live in such a great country with so many diverse areas - they are going to love exploring from Alaska to Florida and all parts in between! They say you should give your kids experiences and not things...this will be one of the best gifts Jenny and her husband could ever give their kids! Visiting quilt shops all across the country!! Woot! Woot!
Stephanie brought in two of her Value Village finds - she purchased the piece of handwork and then made a pillow out of it - love the sentiment. She also found this scherenschnitte (gazoontite!) piece - which is a form of paper cutting - and it's really beautiful! So many tiny pieces!
These blocks were made at a class Stephanie took from Sujata Shaw. Sujata is all about sewing and creating freely - no straight lines needed! No fussy cutting - no pattern even - just the ability to think and sew outside the box/block! These blocks and those that Sujata creates for her quilts all have movement in them - making them a bit more interesting, no?
Denise is peeking out behind the quilt! Sorry Denise, no time to crop! This beauty is Helen's, you've seen it before but now it's quilted and bound and ready to be loved! Do you see the big pink flower Helen appliqued onto the quilt? This is a Where's Waldo kind of thing...see it? Love this quilt!
This is another one of Helen's masterpieces - she calls it her "kitchen sink" quilt. This one was truly a labor of love - just look at all of those very TINY pieces of fabric! Mind-BoGgLiNg!!
Barbara brought two of her beautiful Halloween pillows for us to ooooogle over. She made these a while back and so seeing them again was so fun - like visiting an old friend! Love them Barbara!
Marsha made this quilt for her daughter and then she let us play one of our favorite quilt group games...it's called, See If You Can Find The Mistake! We love this game, especially if it's not OUR quilt! I couldn't find the mistake - it had to be pointed out to me - probably because ALL of my quilts have mistakes and I just don't care...I'm not a "museum quilt maker!" Marsha asked if she should take the quilt apart and fix it and we all said NO!!! Her "mistake" makes this quilt much more wonderful!!
In case you can't see it, here you go...the bottom right should be pointed to the corner...but it's so much fun having it go the wrong way!!! Marsha, we all loved it!
This is Marsha's quilt for her other daughter - all quilted and bound and Marsha quilted it herself! Way to go Marsha!!
Denise just has a little bit of binding left to sew down and her pumpkin runner will be done! Terry and Barbara are trying to get in on the act! Denise pieced that checkerboard border!!! Super wonderful!!
