Remember this? I showed you pics of it a few weeks back. I made quilt blocks and put them into the wedding guest book for people to sign when they came to the boy and his new wife's wedding reception. Then I sewed the blocks together into the quilt top pictured above. The other picture is of the back of the quilt. Everything was going swimmingly...I sandwiched the two pieces together with batting, pinned it up, and began machine-quilting like a mad woman. It wasn't until I was at the end of my 2nd bobbin that I bothered to turn the quilt over and look at my stitching...and that, my friends, was when I saw this...
Just look at that mess! OMGosh!! I didn't know whether to laugh, cry or swear a blue-streak! So I did all three! Then I packed up my machine and headed down to the repair shop since I didn't have a clue as to how to fix it - I tried - nothing worked. Gail at Northwest Sewing and Vac was wonderful!! Thank you Gail!! She replaced my bobbin holder-thingy, which she said had been hit so many times by the needle it was warped, causing the bobbin to sew unevenly. And she replaced it for free! Within an hour I was back home with my machine...but it was another TWO STINKIN' WEEKS before I could get the quilt back in my machine to quilt it...that's how long it took me to UNsew my mess! Two hours a night for two weeks straight I unsewed/unpicked/picked out...it was a real test of my patience! Finally the last bad stitch was removed and I was able to finish the quilt!!
The quilt was gently washed, without detergent, and dried so I could get it nice and soft. I didn't want to risk having the signatures fade even a little so I just washed it in cold water. Before washing I once again heat set the ink with my iron...I would have felt bad if President Obama and Michelle's signatures faded away! (My sister and her kids had a great time making up names to sign!)
When I showed the boy the back of the quilt he said, "Well that's random!" He likes to state the obvious. I reminded him of my motto, You Get What You Get! (And better be damn happy about it, too!)
The bride picked the colors - they are her favorite - and they're the colors in their new home - which is super cute! The boy is learning just how fun it is to be a home owner...as his paycheck flies out the door to Home Depot! Last week he and his best bud spent one full day jack-hammering the bottom of their Olympic-size lap pool...
The pool is so huge it would cost a fortune to heat it and keep it maintained - plus it was really damaged, it had been empty for three years so it just had to go. The boy is going to fill it in with dirt - truckloads of dirt - and then plant grass so he'll have a nice yard with several putting greens! After they got the bottom of the pool torn up (it was made of clay so it came up easily) they started in on the concrete decking that goes around the pool...it did not come up easily so the boy continues to jack-hammer away at it a little at a time. After all that jack-hammering I think he kind of shakes when he walks and his teeth definitely rattle! But it will all be worth it when it's done!
When the boy is done with his home-owner duties he and his wife can plop down on their sofa and curl up in their new quilt...and look for Ted Nugent's signature!
