Years ago my good friend Becky gave me two pieces of dining room furniture - they were both buffet pieces. I painted the smaller of the two pieces black and it's now in our family room and our TV sits on it. The larger piece has been in our bathroom as a giant catch-all...everything from towels, tissue, soap and jewelry resides in it's big roomy drawers. I had always planned on refinishing it but never seemed to get around to it - until now.
As you can see, the drawers had already been removed and the top of the buffet had some damage. Refinishing it was going to be a big job! It wasn't until I saw a decoupaged dresser on HGTV that I knew I could re-do this buffet without all of the trouble involved in refinishing it! And since I had just become the beneficiary of a box of old sheet music (my sister bought it at a garage sale when she was up here for the wedding and only took a handful home with her, she left the rest with me!) my "what to do with the dresser" problem was solved!
Using a rotary cutter, mat and ruler, I fussy-cut the sheet music to fit the dimensions of the drawers. The decoupage glue was easy to use - paint on, lay the sheet of music on top, paint on a top coat. Voila! It dried pretty quickly and was easily cleaned up with water.
The sheet music was over-lapped just a bit, but I didn't worry about matching it up or keeping the lines from sheet to sheet even. It was such an easy project and only took a couple of hours to do the entire buffet! One thing though, if you try this, once the sheet music is put on, you have to use a popsicle stick, or something similar, to smooth it out so there aren't any creases - and you have to work quickly. I ended up with some creasing in the music in a few places but it didn't bother me enough to make me want to re-do them.
Once all the sheets were on, and decoupaged over, I brushed on a polyurethane varnish with stain...it gave the piece a more distressed/aged look - which I really love! I was going to purchase new knobs for the dresser but decided to use the original ones - I think they work, no?
So the old buffet piece is once again back in our bathroom...which still isn't done. The tile guy ran out of base-board tile so we're waiting on that to come in, then the tile guy will come back and finish it up - another week I'm sure! We're into our bathroom remodel 8 weeks - when we were promised a 3 week time frame!
The mister painted the bathroom walls green...and we're getting used to the very busy black and white floor...but all in all I like how it's shaping up and I LOVE how the buffet turned out!
Across from the buffet/catch-all, is our new bathtub and the new tile surround, which matches our new shower...I love the subway tile!
So we're getting there - just a few more pieces of tile and we'll be done! On to the next project!
