It's finally finished - my Neece quilt - made from fabric I purchased in Nice, France! You may remember me telling you about it - but if not, I'll happily bend your ear/eyes again. The mister and I were bumbling down a little cobblestone street in Nice and came upon Le Cottonneirie - a Patchwork Shop. I could not hide my excitement...and since we were on our way back to our hotel, I told the mister to just go on ahead, it was only two blocks, and I would pop into the store, have a look around and then meet him back at the hotel. To my surprise, he agreed! As he walked off, I sprinted into the shop - and then stopped, dumbfounded by everything I saw! Wonderful, beautiful trinkets everywhere I looked! And fabric from ceiling to floor! I knew my time was short, if I wasn't at the hotel in 15 minutes the mister would come looking and put an end to my mania...so I worked quickly, gathering and grabbing everything that wasn't nailed down. I found some lovely things...and then I spotted the linen fabric line which I thought was French but it turned out to be from Spain...potato/potota...it's all on the same continent so I didn't bat an eyelash! I had it cut, paid for and packaged up with everything else in about 12 minutes flat!
Linen is 100% cotton but is usually not used for quilting...I was worried it would shrink up horribly but it surprised me! The quilt washed up beautifully and shrank just the right amount around the quilting, and it's as soft as any quilt I've ever made!
This measures 60 x 72 so it's a pretty good size quilt - I was going to back it with flannel but opted for cotton because the linen fabric gives this quilt a good weight - it's a bit heavier which I love!
This was photographed in between rain storms...it's so funny to me when we have family visit us and they complain about the rain, "It's raining again?!" Welcome to Seattle! But today the sun is out...at least for now...as the weathermen like to say, if you don't like the weather just wait 5 minutes!
Fabric purchased in 2011, flimsy pieced in 2012, quilted in 2013! Record time! This will always remind me of our time in Nice - it was so, so great! If you haven't been there, put it on your bucket list - it's worth the time, trouble and money! And if you go, be sure to pop into Le Cottonneirie and see their new wing, which I'm sure they were able to build after I paid them a visit!
If you were thinking my Singapore Sling came with ice and a straw, you'd be wrong...it's pictured above. I made it for my friend Deb who lives in Singapore, so when she dashes out to a shop she can sling her goodies back in a light-weight-waterproof bag! The orange fabric is lightly coated with a waterproof film, it's not heavy like oil cloth and I wish I knew what it was called but I purchased that fabric in Toulouse, France in 2003! I made placemats with some of the fabric and had just enough left for this tote.
Deb likes bright colors so I hope she'll like this. I know you're probably thinking I should have pressed the darn thing...and I did, right before I folded it up and stuffed it into a package to send to her! Happy shopping Deb and thanks for the ties!
