It's been a while since our entire quilt group had been together - so our meeting last Friday at my house was really fun! We had time to catch up with each other and then we had a great little show!
Denise started us off with her red, black and white quilt. This was a group effort - we made the blocks for Denise a while back - it was nice to see them put to good use!
Denise also made the black and white quilt, it's a gift for her sister. She started this quilt at our retreat in September and just has the binding to go! Denise also made the adorable little yo-yo tree...and showed us the beginnings of another paper-pieced Christmas project...the yo-yo tree probably took more time to make than the quilt!
Here's another retreat quilt - this enormous quilt was made by Kareena for her niece - it's a large twin, extra long so the quilt can be tucked over the pillow. Now Kareena has to ship it to Australia in time for Christmas...$$$!
If you're a teenager, or you live with one, you've no doubt heard of the hottest boy band since the Beetles...One Direction...well, this is Kareena's One Direction quilt for her daughter, who is nuts about this band! Kareena designed this quilt, used "British" fabric for the squares and came up with the center all on her own...if you look closely you'll see the edges of the "1" and "D" are uneven, which represents the coastline of England...at first we all thought the center was the back of a British bus! Now, here's the really interesting thing...Kareena made TWO of these quilts...one for her daughter Emily and one for her friend. The two girls have had tickets to the One Direction concert for a while now and the concert isn't until JUNE!!!
Here's another retreat quilt - Lori worked on this quilt for her granddaughter and Terry quilted it for her. If you click on the picture you'll be able to see the double quilting that Terry did...amazing!
Speaking of Terry...she made another felted wool piece. You might recall Terry made one of these last year for our Christmas gift exchange - this one is for her. I wish you could see the workmanship - her teensy-tiny stitches are almost invisible!
This is Terry's wonky tree quilt top - very fun, no? I think this was paper-pieced but I'm not sure - it's really cute!
Back to Lori - I almost forgot this amazing quilt! Lori made this quilt for her grandson - he is going to love it!
This is the last of the retreat quilts - Marsha completed one block at our retreat - (mainly because she was so busy sewing on a binding for Moi!) now she has the entire quilt put together! She designed the pattern, all paper-pieced, and this quilt is a gift, too! So many generous hearts!
This bag is one of my very favorites...Helen made it years ago and I think she donated it to one of our sales, and Janet purchased it...and when Janet brings it to quilt group I usually end up drooling over it. I just love the fabric! Janet didn't bring the bag to show, she just brought it to carry her quilts in but I couldn't resist another chance to see it!
This quilt was another group effort - we made the blocks for Janet. Her border turned out so great! I do love red and white quilts! Janet also brought up something most quilters struggle with, whether to pre-wash fabrics. I do not pre-wash...even reds, and yes, I have had some trouble with reds bleeding...Janet had some trouble with this quilt, too, one block is more pink and red than red and white...so we talked about washing vs. not washing and color-catchers and all that...I'm still not pre-washing, I'm not afraid of pink!
This is Janet's quilt, too. It's wonderful - just wonderful! Janet pointed out that many of the greens bled in this quilt - it's made with batiks - so most of the white fabrics are a very soft green...which works great! So back to talking about pre-washing...I guess I'd have to say I would pre-wash batiks...but nothing else!
If you could feel this quilt you would love it as much as I do - it's made with upholstery fabrics and it's very heavy. Janet asked for opinions on what to do for the binding, she got plenty of them, including some from me which proved to be all wrong! Oh well...whatever she does I know it will be great. This quilt is going to be auctioned off to raise money for her church charity - I hope it makes a bucket full! I plan to buy tickets, which go on sale in January, I'll let you know so you can buy some, too!
This quilt is Stephanie's - made from left-over fabrics from a quilt she made for her son (you can see it on the left side). I love the colors in this quilt - very different, modern and warm - and look at all of the different blocks she sewed up!
Stephanie purchased the backing for this quilt at IKEA! Who knew they sold fabric?!? It has numbers spelled out all over it and she said their fabric comes on a roll for $4 a yard! You can see the two quilts side by side - wish I'd taken better pictures. These quilts make me think of a loft in Soho...I can picture them tossed over a suede sectional in front of floor to ceiling windows with a jazz cd playing in the background and martini's being shaken, not stirred...
Well that's it - I'll leave you with a picture of the table before we sat down to lunch. It was a great meeting and the rain even let up for a bit! Now we're back in the soup so it's easy to stay inside and sew...and bake...and sew...and bake...it's such a delicious cycle!
