A few members of the Sew Whats, my quilt group, got together today to complete two quilt tops to be given to American Hero Quilts to be finished into quilts. American Hero Quilts is really one lady - Sue Nebeker- who was so touched by all of the injured men and women returning from Iraq and Afghanistan that she wanted to do something special for them - she wanted them all to receive a quilt. Over the last 7 years she has donated hundreds and hundreds of quilts to Madigan Army Hospital - many made by herself and her small band of friends and others made by quilt groups who donate them to Sue. That's what our group did - we made scrappy pinwheels and then got together to piece them together into two different quilt tops.
Sue and her group like to quilt the quilts themselves - so they only ask for quilt tops. Stephanie, one of our members, has such a HUGE heart that she is donating the quilt top below, one she started several years ago - it's a perfect American Hero Quilt!
Sue asks for "patriotic" quilts that would be appropriate for either a man or a woman. It's so nice to know that the injured men and women who return to the states through Madigan Hospital will be given one of these quilts - and Sue says each and every quilt it prayed over before it is given away. She, herself, is an American hero. Sue suffers from multiple-sclerosis but doesn't let that get in the way of her quilting. Thanks sue, for giving us the opportunity to help you - maybe one day we won't have anyone to make these quilts for - wouldn't that be nice!
The top on the left has pieced red sashing, which made such a difference! The top on the right just has solid strips for the sashing - still cute but it doesn't have the pizzazz the other one has. Oh well, I'm sure both of them will be loved!
